MARTA stations to feature mural artwork

MARTA is planning to install murals at select rail stations and it wants them to be artistic expressions of their respective communities.

The three stations will be King Memorial, Oakland City and H.E. Holmes. The public can have input on the design at a meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at James Orange Recreation Center at 1305 Oakland Drive SW in Atlanta.

MARTA is pursuing the projects in conjunction with WonderRoot, En Route, the TransFormation Alliance and Fulton County Arts & Culture.

Fahamu Pecou

Atlanta artist Fahamu Pecou will create works for four MARTA stations, starting with King Memorial station, as part of En Route. The public art project, funded in part by a recently announced $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant, is being organized by WonderRoot and other partners. CONTRIBUTED BY BRYAN MELTZ

The murals are to be created by lead artist Fahamu Pecou, whose compelling and inspiring life story was chronicled in 2013 in an award-winning story written by Atlanta Journal-Constitution staff reporter Rosalind Bentley.
